TB87 - Set of Small Bowls - Arita-yaki 有田焼
Vintage item never used. This refined set of small bowls was crafted by Sugiyama (杉山) in the renowned Arita ware (有田焼) tradition of Saga Prefecture. Each bowl is made from fine white porcelain with a slightly speckled glaze, adorned with hand-painted indigo-blue kikyō (桔梗), or Japanese bellflowers.
The kikyō flower has long been cherished in Japanese art and culture as a symbol of sincerity, eternal love, and unchanging loyalty. The delicate five-petaled blossoms, rendered in graceful cobalt brushwork, beautifully complement the natural texture of the ceramic surface. Together, they create a serene and timeless aesthetic that embodies the spirit of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
Arita-yaki, originating from Arita in Saga Prefecture, is one of Japan’s most celebrated styles of porcelain. With over 400 years of history, it is renowned for its fine craftsmanship, smooth white clay, and intricate hand-painted decoration. These plates exemplify the timeless elegance and subtle artistry that define Arita ware.
These bowls are ideal for daily use, as serving dishes for side plates or desserts, and also make a thoughtful and tasteful gift. The set comes complete with its original wooden tomobako (共箱).
