TB86 - Incense Container Box of Mino-yaki 美濃焼

TB86 - Incense Container Box of Mino-yaki 美濃焼

This celadon incense container (香合, kōgō), shaped as a gentle dog (戌), is a beautiful example of Mino-yaki (美濃焼) ceramics, crafted by the kiln 不二窯 (Fujigama). Known for its delicate glazes and refined forms, Mino ware is one of Japan’s oldest and most celebrated pottery traditions, originating in the Gifu region.

Finished in a soft blue-green celadon glaze (青瓷), this incense holder embodies a quiet elegance. The dog’s form is both endearing and symbolic, featuring hand-painted details in red, green, and gold, including auspicious motifs of pine and plum that signify renewal and longevity in Japanese culture.

The dog (inu) is the eleventh sign in the Japanese zodiac (干支, eto) and is revered as a symbol of loyalty, protection, and familial love. Perfect for holding incense, trinkets, or small treasures, this piece showcases classic mid-century Japanese craftsmanship with a modernist flair. Its vibrant geometric pattern makes it not only functional but also a decorative collectible for display.

Attributed to Fujigama, a Mino-region kiln whose works are recognized in Japanese tea and folk ceramic circles, this incense container carries both aesthetic and cultural value—ideal for tea ceremony practice, New Year display, or gifting to those born in the Year of the Dog.

Size: 7 x 4 x 6cm
