TB451 - Koma-nuri Lacquer-Style Confectionery Box 独楽塗
This beautiful vintage Japanese confectionery box (菓子器, kashiki) features the traditional Koma-nuri (独楽塗) decorative technique, inspired by the colourful patterns of Japanese spinning tops (koma). Its striking lid is adorned with a mesmerising spiral of concentric colours, blending deep green, golden yellow, warm orange, and black into a harmonious circular design.
Koma-nuri is a traditional Japanese lacquerware decorative style characterised by vibrant circular bands of colour reminiscent of a spinning top in motion. Particularly associated with Japanese lacquerware traditions, this playful yet elegant design symbolises movement, continuity, and good fortune. The colourful patterns have long been appreciated for their cheerful appearance and distinctive craftsmanship.
Crafted from ABS resin with a glossy lacquer-style finish, this piece offers the aesthetic charm of traditional Japanese lacquerware in a lightweight and practical form. The round box features a removable lid and a thoughtfully arranged interior with five outer compartments surrounding a central circular section, making it ideal for presenting traditional Japanese sweets (wagashi), small snacks, or assorted treats during gatherings and tea occasions.
Beyond its practical function, the box is a charming example of Japanese decorative tableware, combining traditional folk-inspired aesthetics with modern materials. Its captivating spiral design also makes it a lovely display piece for collectors of Japanese vintage housewares and lacquer-style objects.
