TB44 - Set of Teacup Tokoname-yaki 常滑焼
This is a finely crafted set of five Tokoname-yaki (常滑焼) teacups, created by the renowned kiln Shinzangama (真山窯) in Tokoname, Japan. Made from the distinctive red clay known as shudei (朱泥), each cup carries the rich tradition of Tokoname ware, one of Japan’s celebrated Six Ancient Kilns. The cups are delicately carved with a bamboo motif, a classic design symbolizing strength, resilience, and harmony in Japanese culture.
The smooth red clay surface highlights the natural beauty of the material, while the hand-carved bamboo details add both texture and elegance. These are yunomi, tea cups intended for everyday use, yet their refined craftsmanship makes them equally suited for display. Traditionally, such sets are often referred to as “夫婦湯飲み” (meoto yunomi), or “husband-and-wife teacups,” embodying the wish for a couple’s harmony and longevity together.
The set comes complete with its original wooden tomobako (storage box), inscribed with calligraphy that attests to its authenticity and origin. The warm patina of the box enhances its charm, reflecting the timeless nature of the pieces it holds.
This Tokoname-yaki tea cup set is not only practical for enjoying tea but also carries the cultural and artistic spirit of Japanese ceramic tradition. It would make a thoughtful wedding gift, a special addition to a tea ceremony collection, or a treasured item for collectors of fine Japanese pottery.
