The word 金盃 (kinpai) literally means “golden sake cup”. It is a traditional vessel in Japan, and while it can technically be used for drinking, its main uses are ceremonial and symbolic: In weddings, New Year celebrations, or other important occasions, sake is sometimes shared using a special cup like a kinpai. Drinking from a golden cup symbolizes purity, prosperity, and good fortune.

Gold itself symbolizes wealth and long life. A golden sake cup embodies the wish for the recipient’s continued prosperity and happiness. Sometimes kinpai are placed on display in the home, in a tokonoma (alcove), or even used as part of Shinto or Buddhist offering rituals.
