TB306 - Yamato Hagi-yaki sake set 萩焼

This refined Hagi-yaki (萩焼) sake set was crafted by Yamato Unkoku-gama (大和雲谷窯), a respected kiln in Yamaguchi Prefecture renowned for its elegant interpretation of traditional Hagi ware. The set includes a softly rounded tokkuri sake flask and two matching ochoko cups, all presented in their original signed wooden storage box.

Founded within the rich ceramic heritage of Hagi, Yamato Unkoku-gama became especially admired for producing tea utensils and tableware that embody the quiet sophistication of Japanese aesthetics. The kiln’s works are highly appreciated by tea practitioners and collectors for their balance of simplicity, warmth, and refined craftsmanship. Under the direction of master artisan Yamato Unkoku (大和雲谷), the workshop developed pieces distinguished by subtle glaze transitions, gentle forms, and a deeply calming tactile presence.

This set beautifully reflects those qualities through its soft pale glaze, delicately shifting between milky white and faint blush-grey tones. Fine natural crazing (kannyū) appears throughout the glaze surface, a celebrated characteristic of Hagi ware that gradually deepens with use over time, allowing the vessel to develop its own unique personality. The rounded silhouette of the tokkuri and the slightly uneven handmade forms of the cups create a harmonious, organic elegance rooted in the philosophy of wabi-sabi.

Hagi ware has been treasured since the early Edo period and is particularly associated with Japanese tea culture for its understated beauty and intimate connection between object and user. Pieces such as this sake set invite slow appreciation, whether used for warm sake gatherings or displayed as an example of traditional Japanese ceramic artistry.
