TB28 - Aizu-nuri lacquerware – Serving Bowl 会津塗御盛鉢
This 御盛鉢 (O-moribachi) is a traditional Aizu-nuri lacquerware piece. Aizu (Fukushima Prefecture, Japan), one of Japan’s most renowned lacquerware production regions. Crafted with natural wood and coated with multiple layers of genuine urushi lacquer, giving it a deep, glossy vermilion red tone.
Primary uses of this product is used to present and serve shared dishes such as simmered foods, vinegared dishes, sashimi, or festive meals. Guests then take portions into their own small bowls. Or it could simply used as a fruit/ salad bowl and decoration on table.
The production of lacquerware in Aizu began in 1590 when Lord Gamo Ujisato moved to Aizu and, under the guidance of master Kawa Sogen, devoted efforts to improving lacquerware. This laid the foundation of today’s Aizu lacquerware. In 1643, Lord Hoshina Masayuki entered Aizu and directed Yamada Uemon-no-suke and others to work diligently, further solidifying lacquerware production. Over time, research and improvements advanced, and after the Meiji era, designs, maki-e (gold/silver decoration), and colors such as vermilion were refined.
