TB241 - Banko-yaki vase by Sakuma Hōzan 萬古焼
This Banko-yaki (萬古焼) vase is a sculptural work by Sakuma Hōzan 佐久間芳山, he is a ceramic artist associated with Banko-yaki (萬古焼), a pottery tradition centered in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture. He is linked to 松古窯 (Shōko-gama), a kiln producing both functional and artistic ceramics rooted in traditional techniques.
Finished in a rich yakishime-style (焼締) surface, the clay reveals deep, earthy tones ranging from warm reddish-brown to purplish hues, with subtle variations created by the firing process. The softly burnished texture and natural sheen reflect the influence of high-temperature firing, where flame and atmosphere leave their mark on the surface. Horizontal throwing lines and faint tool marks further emphasize the handcrafted character of the piece.
The design suggests use as a hanaire, it refers to a traditional Japanese flower vase used in ikebana and in the tea ceremony, where it plays a quiet yet essential role in setting the atmosphere of a space. Unlike Western vases, a hanaire is not meant to hold large bouquets, but rather to highlight the beauty of a single branch or a minimal seasonal arrangement. The focus is on harmony, asymmetry, and the relationship between the vessel, the flowers, and the surrounding space.
The vase is accompanied by its original signed tomobako, inscribed “花入” (flower vase) and bearing the artist’s name 芳山, confirming its authorship.
