TB212 - Lidded Cup set of by Miura Tōen 三浦陶苑
This lidded cup set from Nikkōzan (日光山) is made by Miura Tōen (三浦陶苑) , a kiln known for its expressive glazes and souvenir wares.
The pair features a softly undulating, barrel-shaped form with fitted lids, giving the cups a sculptural presence. The glaze flows in layered tones of deep black, smoky grey, and muted olive, blending into one another in organic bands reminiscent of mist drifting over mountain ridges. Accents of gold add a refined highlight, catching the light beautifully against the darker base. The white calligraphy boldly inscribed on the surface reads Nikkōzan “日光山,” paying homage to the sacred mountain area of Nikkō, long associated with Tōshō-gū Shrine and the rich cultural heritage of Tochigi Prefecture.
The subtle rippling texture of the body enhances the tactile quality of the cups, while the lids help retain warmth, making them ideal for tea. They can be used for green tea, hojicha, or other hot beverages, and also serve as elegant display pieces reflecting regional craftsmanship.
Presented in their original box, this set embodies the nostalgic charm of Japanese travel ceramics — functional yet decorative, and deeply connected to place. A meaningful vintage pair that captures the atmosphere of Nikkō’s mountains, history, and artistry.
