This small Kosobe-yaki (古曾部焼) cup is crafted in a style of Hagi ware (萩焼), expressing quiet refinement in a compact form.

The cup features a gently cylindrical silhouette with softly rounded walls and a neatly finished foot. Its surface is covered in a warm beige glaze, accented by a flowing band of milky white that wraps naturally around the body. The layered glaze creates subtle, landscape-like striations, evoking the calm, earthy character associated with Hagi-style ceramics. Fine speckling in the clay and delicate tonal transitions enhance its understated beauty. The soft gloss and gentle pooling of glaze give depth and warmth, encouraging close appreciation.

Kosobe-yaki originates from the Kosobe area in present-day Takatsuki, Osaka Prefecture. It developed during the Edo period and is closely associated with tea culture. Historically, Kosobe kilns produced tea wares and utensils favored by practitioners of chanoyu. The ware is known for its natural clay textures, subdued glazes, and restrained decoration—qualities that harmonize with the wabi aesthetic of the tea ceremony.

Despite its modest size, it fits comfortably in the hand and is ideal for small servings of tea or sake. As with many traditional Japanese ceramics, continued use may deepen its character over time, enriching its surface and further embodying the beauty of simplicity and natural aging.
