TB195 - Lacquer tea saucers of Sanuki-bori 讃岐彫

TB195 - Lacquer tea saucers of Sanuki-bori 讃岐彫

A vintage set of Sanuki-bori (讃岐彫) lacquer tea saucers (茶托), a traditional wood-carving and lacquer craft originating from Kagawa Prefecture, formerly known as Sanuki Province.

Sanuki-bori is distinguished by its bold, rhythmic carving cut directly into solid wood, followed by layers of lacquer that enhance both durability and depth. The radiating carved patterns on these saucers create a striking sense of movement, while the deep reddish-brown lacquer brings out the warmth of the wood grain beneath. Each piece shows subtle variations, reflecting the hand-crafted nature of the technique.

Triangular in form yet softly rounded, these tea saucers are designed to cradle a yunomi cup securely, balancing practicality with sculptural beauty. Traditionally used in Japanese tea settings, Sanuki-bori tea saucers also make elegant accent pieces for modern interiors—perfect for displaying small objects or simply appreciating as standalone folk craft works.

A quiet but powerful example of regional Japanese lacquerware, this set embodies the rustic strength and refined craftsmanship that Sanuki-bori has been known for over generations.
