TB185 - Jizo Kogo Box of Kutani-yaki 九谷焼

TB185 - Jizo Kogo Box of Kutani-yaki 九谷焼

This Kōgō (香盒) is a fine example of Kutani-yaki (九谷焼), created by Nakata Kingyoku III, the third generation (三代) of the Kingyoku lineage (仲田錦玉).

The Kingyoku (錦玉) is associated with high-quality decorative Kutani ware, especially works that balance traditional overglaze enamels with a playful, sculptural sensibility. While earlier generations focused more heavily on classical kutani painting styles, the third generation is particularly noted for figural and auspicious forms.

The piece is modeled in the form of Jizō Bosatsu (地蔵菩薩), a deeply beloved Buddhist figure in Japan known as the protector of children, travelers, and souls in transition. Jizō is associated with compassion, guidance, and quiet guardianship, making this kōgō not only a tea utensil but also a spiritually meaningful object.

Jizō’s gentle, serene expression is rendered in a soft celadon-toned lid forming the head, subtly painted with minimal features that convey calm and benevolence. The rounded body is decorated in rich emerald-green tones with rhythmic circular patterns, accented by elegant gold-painted grape vines and leaves. In Japanese symbolism, grapes represent abundance, continuity, and prosperity, harmonizing beautifully with Jizō’s role as a benevolent guardian.

Originally intended to hold incense for the Japanese tea ceremony, this kōgō is equally suitable as a small keepsake container or as a contemplative display piece. It comes with its original wooden tomobako, enhancing its authenticity and collectable value.
