TB179 - Hagi-yaki Teacup Set by Tenpōzan 萩焼
Never Used. This elegant pair of Hagi-yaki teacups is crafted by the Tenpōzan kiln, reflecting the quiet refinement and subtle beauty that define traditional Hagi ware. The cups feature a soft, cylindrical form accented with 切足 (kiri-ashi)—a gently cut, notched foot that slightly lifts the vessel, adding both visual lightness and a refined tactile detail.
The glaze displays a delicate gradation of pale blue, warm peach, and soft ivory tones, settling into a fine network of natural crackle (kannyū), a hallmark of Hagi-yaki. These gentle color transitions are achieved through careful firing and interaction with the clay, resulting in cups that feel calm, warm, and deeply organic. This subtle color shift — known in Hagi ware as “Hagi no nanabake” (萩の七化け) — beautifully captures the kiln’s natural variations, ensuring no two pieces are ever alike.
The set comes in its original wooden kiri box, bearing hand-brushed calligraphy and seals, identifying the kiln and maker. A gold label on the plates confirms production by Tenpōzan (天鵬山), a kiln known for refined craftsmanship and adherence to traditional Hagi firing techniques.
