This modern Hagi-yaki (萩焼) tea cup set by Shutōen 椿秀窯 beautifully reinterprets a centuries-old ceramic tradition through a contemporary lens. The pair features gently tapered forms that fit comfortably in the hand, finished with soft, flowing glazes that transition subtly between tones—one cup showing a calm bluish-lavender gradient, the other a serene milky white with a faint blush at the rim.

Shutōen is a Hagi-yaki kiln based in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, a region renowned as the historical heart of Hagi ware since the early Edo period. While rooted in traditional techniques—such as soft, porous clay bodies and naturally crackling glazes—the kiln is especially known for its modern color sensibility and clean, approachable forms.

True to Hagi ware aesthetics, the glaze surface reveals delicate crackle (貫入, kannyū), adding depth and warmth. Over time and with use, these fine lines may gradually deepen in character, a hallmark of Hagi ceramics often described as “the seven transformations of Hagi.” The unglazed foot exposes the natural clay body, grounding the refined surface with an earthy contrast.

Presented in a wooden box and accompanied by original documentation, this set reflects 椿秀窯’s commitment to balancing tradition with modern design. Elegant yet understated, it is ideal for everyday tea moments or as a thoughtful gift for those who appreciate contemporary Japanese craftsmanship rooted in history.
