This authentic vintage Japanese medicine box (薬箱 kusuri-bako) originates from Gifu Prefecture, an area historically associated with traveling medicine merchants. Crafted from solid natural wood, the box features a classic stackable drawer design, originally intended for storing household remedies and herbal medicines.

The exterior retains its original hand-painted calligraphy on the lid. The front is adorned with original metal plaques and labels, including 酒井貴命堂, identifying the historic medicine distributor, along with vintage pharmaceutical insignia that add strong period character.

Inside, the drawer reveals an original paper inventory record, handwritten with medicine names and quantities. This document is a rare surviving detail that offers a glimpse into pre-war to early Shōwa–era daily life and Japan’s community-based healthcare system. The warm patina of the wood, subtle wear, and aged paper all speak to decades of use.

This box makes a wonderful decorative storage piece, ideal for stationery, small collectibles, tea utensils, or as a striking interior accent in a wabi-sabi or Japanese folk-inspired space. It also appeals strongly to collectors of Japanese antiques, pharmacy history, or traditional folk artifacts. A rare and atmospheric piece of Japanese everyday history, blending utility, craftsmanship, and storytelling.
