TB154 - Kasama-yaki Large Bowl by Yoshida Mitsuo 笠間焼

This large bowl is a refined example of Kasama-yaki (笠間焼), created at Sahara-gama (佐白窯) by Yoshida Mitsuo 吉田光男, a potter known for his thoughtful balance of tradition, material sensitivity, and quiet modernity. The bowl carries a calm yet expressive presence, reflecting the open and experimental spirit for which Kasama ware is celebrated.

The form is generous and grounded, with softly curving walls that open comfortably from the foot to the rim. Its proportions feel stable and reassuring, making it well suited not only for visual appreciation but also for practical use. The interior reveals subtle wheel-thrown spirals at the center, left visible beneath the glaze, offering a gentle sense of movement and a direct trace of the maker’s hand.

The glaze is particularly striking: a soft celadon-leaning grey-green base enlivened by countless white, snow-like speckles that scatter organically across the surface. These spots appear to float within the glaze, creating depth and a sense of quiet vitality. Toward the interior and rim, the glaze thins and pools irregularly, allowing warmer tones of the clay body to emerge and interact naturally with the surface. This interplay between glaze and clay is characteristic of Kasama-yaki, where firing effects are embraced rather than restrained.

Accompanied by its original documentation and box storage materials, this bowl carries clear provenance. As a work by Yoshida Mitsuo of Sahara-gama, it represents a mature expression of Kasama ceramics.
