TB145 - Small plates Tokoname ware 常滑焼
This pair of small plates is a refined example of Tokoname ware (常滑焼), created by the potter Tōyū (陶雄), whose work is known for its quiet strength and sensitivity to line and surface. Formed in a gentle, slightly irregular round, the plates immediately convey the warmth of handcraft, balancing precision with a natural, unforced presence.
The surface is finished in a subtly textured. Their understated gray-green tone harmonizes with the pale ground, creating a calm visual cadence that feels both modern and deeply rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics. The simplicity of the design allows light and shadow to play across the surface, enhancing the tactile quality of the clay.
Tokoname-yaki, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, has a long history centered in Aichi Prefecture and is celebrated for its honest materials, skilled throwing, and functional beauty. While Tokoname is especially famous for teapots, works such as these plates reflect the same philosophy: vessels made for everyday use, elevated through thoughtful form and restrained decoration. The clay body and firing impart a quiet durability, making the plates suitable for regular use while retaining an artisanal character.
As a set, these two small plates are ideal for serving sweets, seasonal side dishes, or condiments, and they also work beautifully as understated display pieces.
