TB131 - Kiseto Chawan – Seto-yaki Matcha Tea Bowl 黄瀬戸
This Kiseto (黄瀬戸) chawan represents one of the classic glaze traditions of Seto-yaki 瀬戸焼, one of Japan’s oldest and most historically important ceramic centers. Seto ware, produced in Aichi Prefecture, is renowned for its continuous pottery heritage dating back over 1,000 years, and is the source of many foundational Japanese glaze styles, including Kiseto, Setoguro, and Shino.
This hand-thrown chawan features. a warm yellow–ochre Kiseto glaze, a signature of Seto-yaki since the Momoyama period. Natural iron spotting and kiln variations, creating a soft wabi-sabi atmosphere. Visible throwing lines and subtle shaping that highlight the potter’s craftsmanship
Seto is one of Japan’s legendary Rokkoyō (Six Ancient Kilns). The region became famous for its mastery of high-fired, glazed stoneware and its innovative use of ash glazes. Because glazed ceramics were historically so widespread from Seto, the Japanese word for ceramics—“setomono” (瀬戸物)—literally means “things from Seto.”
Kiseto (黄瀬戸) is treasured for its gentle, amber-toned glaze inspired by Chinese celadon and early ash-glazed wares. Its quiet beauty and natural imperfections make it a favorite among tea practitioners and collectors of traditional Mino–Seto pottery.
A wonderful piece for tea ceremony enthusiasts, matcha preparation, interior display, or anyone who appreciates the timeless charm of Seto craftsmanship.
