An exceptionally rare Meiji-period porcelain piece, over 100 years old, crafted by the renowned Fukagawa Chuji (1871–1934). This is a highly collectible work from one of Japan’s most respected porcelain masters. Please note that the item is not in perfect condition.

Fukagawa Chuji (1871–1934), the artist and founder behind this work, was a central figure in modernizing Japanese porcelain for global acclaim. Born into the prestigious Fukagawa family — long associated with the Koransha kiln — Chuji established his own workshop in 1894 after growing dissatisfied with the rigid structure of industrial production. He adopted the Mount Fuji and flowing stream trademark, symbolizing harmony with nature and his unique vision.

Under his direction, the Fukagawa Porcelain Company quickly rose to international prominence. It was awarded the Gold Prize at the 1900 Paris Exposition for a masterfully decorated vase, and continued to earn recognition at events such as the 1904 St. Louis Exposition. In 1910, Fukagawa was officially appointed purveyor to the Japanese Imperial Household, solidifying its reputation as one of the finest porcelain houses in Japan.

Chuji’s vision was not only technical but artistic. He collaborated with designers and sculptors such as Kinsaku Ide and Toshi Ninomiya, blending traditional Japanese themes with a bold, innovative spirit. The workshop remained a leader in exporting Japanese porcelain during the Meiji and Taishō periods, producing both luxurious one-of-a-kind pieces and refined everyday ware for foreign markets. Today, Fukagawa’s legacy is preserved by the Fukagawa-Seiji company, still based in Arita.
