TB06 - Kiyomizu-yaki Bean Pod-Shaped Lidded Container

TB06 - Kiyomizu-yaki Bean Pod-Shaped Lidded Container

This elegant lidded container, crafted in the shape of a bean pod, is a refined example of Kyoyaki (Kyo ware) and Kiyomizu-yaki ceramic tradition. Its soft, organic form reflects the natural beauty of the bean pod, while the refined curves and smooth finish evoke a sense of calm and balance.

The surface features a series of overlapping semicircles rendered in green and gold, a stylized wave motif known as Seigaiha. Though simple in design, this pattern has ancient roots, once found in clay figurines and in the ceremonial robes of the Heian period. Traditionally associated with the vast ocean and eternal calm, the motif conveys wishes for peace and continuity.

Also adorning the container are pine crests, stylized depictions of pine trees. Long revered in Japanese culture, the pine is a symbol of endurance, longevity, and steadfastness. The pattern is a decorative abstraction, drawing on historical crests such as Kushimatsu and Mitsumatsu, once used by various families and artists as emblems of good fortune.

Completing the design is the elegant crane, a bird celebrated for its poise and beauty. Believed to live a thousand years, the crane is a classic symbol of long life and auspicious blessings. Its form is often seen in family crests and traditional art, gracefully captured here in flight.

The interior is glazed in a fresh celadon green, contrasting beautifully with the detailed exterior. Whether used to hold sweets, tea utensils, or small keepsakes, this piece combines functional beauty with timeless elegance.
