SHP410 - Original Japanese Shikishi Artwork 五月節句
A vibrant original Japanese shikishi artwork depicting a traditional 五月節句 (Gogatsu Sekku) motif, associated with Tango no Sekku (端午の節句) — the seasonal celebration now known as Children’s Day in Japan.
The composition features a seated child warrior wearing an elaborate kabuto-style helmet with large golden kuwagata crests, colourful shoulder guards, and a small sword. The figure sits formally on a floral cushion decorated with blue and purple irises, all set against a vivid green background.
The combination of armour, sword, and child figure reflects the traditional imagery displayed during the May festival, when families decorated their homes with samurai helmets, armour, warrior dolls, and other symbols of strength and protection.
Tango no Sekku, celebrated on May 5, was historically known as the Boys’ Festival. Families displayed warrior-related objects to express wishes that children would grow up: strong, healthy, courageous, and protected from misfortune.
The samurai helmet and armour became particularly important symbols because they represented protection, bravery, discipline, and resilience rather than warfare itself.
The festival is also strongly associated with the iris (菖蒲 / shōbu). Through wordplay, shōbu can also evoke 尚武, meaning “martial spirit,” making the iris an especially fitting motif for the occasion. The blue and purple flowers decorating the cushion therefore reinforce the seasonal meaning of the artwork.
