A charming original Japanese shikishi (色紙) artwork featuring a gently painted sheep accompanied by the auspicious calligraphy 「大吉祥」 (Daikichijō), signed Fukiko 富貴子.
The sheep is rendered in soft monochrome ink washes, with loose, expressive brushwork used to suggest its curly wool and gentle features. The large, calm face gives the animal a warm and almost humorous personality, while the restrained palette keeps the composition elegant and serene.
The bold inscription 「大吉祥」 can be translated as: “Great Good Fortune”
It is a highly positive expression associated with good luck, happiness, prosperity, and favorable circumstances.
In East Asian art, the sheep / ram (羊) is often associated with gentleness, harmony, kindness, and good fortune. It is also one of the twelve animals of the zodiac, making sheep imagery especially appropriate for celebratory or New Year-related works.
Paired with 大吉祥, the animal becomes an especially warm symbol of peaceful prosperity and blessings to come.
The signature Fukiko 富貴子 and red seal appear at the lower right, balancing the large calligraphy and completing the composition.
A lovely piece for collectors of Japanese shikishi, sheep or zodiac motifs, auspicious calligraphy, sumi-e, or original vintage Japanese artwork.
