SHP332 - Shikishi print from Kasuga Taisha 春日大社
This vintage 90s shikishi print from Kasuga Taisha 春日大社 features an elegant rabbit motif on a warm gold-toned circular ground. The red shrine stamp 春日神社 appears at the lower left, marking its connection to Kasuga Taisha, one of Nara’s most historic and important Shinto shrines.
The artwork shows a white rabbit in motion, drawn with simple black outlines and a clean, graceful form. Its light body and alert posture give the piece a sense of liveliness and gentle forward movement. The calligraphy 招福 means “inviting good fortune,” making this shikishi an auspicious piece for display.
In Japanese zodiac symbolism, the rabbit / usagi 卯 is associated with gentleness, peace, cleverness, fertility, good relationships, and hopeful progress. Because rabbits move by leaping forward, they are also seen as symbols of advancement and positive new beginnings. The minimal design, gold background, and red calligraphy create a bright shrine-like atmosphere, suitable for New Year decoration or zodiac display.
This piece belongs to a 90s zodiac shikishi series from Kasuga Taisha. Other zodiac animals from the same series are also available, though the full set of twelve years is not complete, so each piece is sold separately. Please feel free to contact me if you are looking for another zodiac animal from this series.
