SHP291 - Shikishi Ink artwork of unyielding 不撓

This powerful shikishi calligraphy from 1988 features the bold inscription 不撓 (Futō)—meaning “unyielding,” “indomitable,” or “never giving up”—written by 小野田寬郎.

Executed in vigorous, expressive brushstrokes, the two characters dominate the composition with striking presence. The ink is applied with confident variation—thick, saturated strokes contrast with dry, textured edges where the brush lifts, revealing the rhythm and physicality of the artist’s hand. Each line carries a sense of force and conviction, embodying the very meaning of the word itself.

Onoda, known for his extraordinary personal history as a former Japanese army officer who continued to hold out in the Philippines for decades after World War II, lends profound authenticity to this inscription. The choice of 不撓 reflects not only a philosophical ideal but also a lived experience—resilience, endurance, and unwavering will under extreme conditions.

The composition is intentionally minimal, allowing the calligraphy to stand alone against the empty ground. A smaller vertical signature to the side balances the bold central characters, adding a quiet counterpoint to their intensity.

Both visually and historically, this work is deeply compelling. It is not merely an example of calligraphic skill, but a statement of character—an embodiment of perseverance and inner strength captured through ink and brush.
