SHP282 - Shikishi artwork by Sano Takeo 佐野猛夫

This shikishi artwork features a boldly stylized dragon rendered in deep indigo tones, created by Sano Takeo 佐野猛夫 (1914–2002), an important figure in modern Japanese textile and dyeing art. Known for his innovative use of traditional techniques, Sano brings a contemporary sensibility to this dynamic composition.

The dragon is depicted in a circular, almost calligraphic form, its elongated body coiling fluidly across the surface. Simplified yet expressive, the creature’s head—defined by sharp, graphic lines—emerges with a sense of motion and vitality. Surrounding it are rhythmic, scale-like markings that emphasize the spiral movement, while a soft turquoise wave form adds contrast and suggests water or breath, enhancing the sense of flow and energy. The composition balances bold abstraction with symbolic clarity, evoking both power and harmony.

Executed using the 蝋纈 (roketsu / batik) technique, the work demonstrates Sano’s mastery of resist-dyeing. By applying wax to areas of the fabric before dyeing, he preserves crisp shapes and layered tones, allowing for both precision and organic texture. The subtle variations in the indigo and the soft gradation of the blue-green pigment reflect his pursuit of delicate expression within a modern, abstract framework.

Sano Takeo was not only an accomplished artist but also a significant educator, serving as an emeritus professor at Kyoto City University of Arts, where he influenced generations of textile artists. A recipient of the Japan Art Academy Prize, he played a central role in elevating contemporary Japanese dyeing into a fine art form.
