This elegant shikishi artwork features a charming arrangement of Hime Daruma 姫だるま crafted from Nishijin-ori (西陣織) fabric, a luxurious traditional textile produced in Kyoto’s historic Nishijin district. Known for its intricate weaving techniques and richly colored silk patterns, Nishijin-ori has been used for centuries in high-quality kimono, obi, and ceremonial textiles.

Set against a softly shimmering gold fan-shaped background, five small Hime Daruma figures are delicately arranged across the surface. Each doll is formed from pieces of finely patterned Nishijin brocade in vibrant colors. The faces of the dolls are simple and serene, with gentle expressions that evoke warmth and elegance.

Hime Daruma, literally “princess Daruma,” are a feminine variation of the traditional Daruma doll. Unlike the bold red Daruma associated with Bodhidharma and perseverance, Hime Daruma are often smaller, softer in appearance, and dressed in kimono-like patterns. They symbolize good fortune, happiness, and protection, and are commonly associated with wishes for prosperity, harmony, and well-being.

Combining textile craftsmanship with traditional symbolism, this shikishi piece transforms fragments of luxurious brocade into a delightful and auspicious composition. The gentle expressions of the Hime Daruma and the radiant gold setting create a work that celebrates both Kyoto’s textile heritage and the timeless charm of Japanese folk motifs.
