SHP273 - Shikishi artwork Ise-katagami 伊勢型紙
This shikishi artwork of Ise-katagami 伊勢型紙, the Japanese stencil-cutting technique historically used to create intricate patterns for dyeing kimono fabrics. Originating in Ise Province (present-day Mie Prefecture), Ise-katagami developed into one of Japan’s most sophisticated stencil arts, prized for its extremely fine cutting and elegant graphic designs.
The composition presents an auspicious Eto, zodiac motif celebrating the Year of the Dog (戌). At the center of the design is a charming stylized dog, rendered with soft rounded shapes and expressive features, seated among bamboo leaves. The animal symbolizes loyalty, protection, and faithful companionship—qualities traditionally associated with the dog in Japanese culture. In the zodiac cycle, the dog is also believed to bring safety, honesty, and harmonious family life.
The imagery is arranged in the crisp, high-contrast style characteristic of stencil design: white forms stand out sharply against a deep brown background, echoing the visual effect of patterns cut into katagami stencils. Above the dog appears the character 「戌」, clearly indicating the zodiac sign. Surrounding elements include pine branches, plum blossoms, and bamboo, referencing the auspicious trio 松竹梅 (shōchikubai)—symbols of perseverance, renewal, and good fortune often associated with New Year celebrations. The crossed arrows evoke hamaya, sacred arrows traditionally used to ward off evil and invite blessings for the coming year.
