Takahashi Shōzan (高橋松山) belongs to the Takahashi family of Ōtsu City, Shiga Prefecture, the hereditary line of artists who have preserved and transmitted the folk painting tradition known as Ōtsu-e (大津絵) since the Edo period.  Benkei’s attire is stylized but recognizable: warrior monk garments, arm guards, and swords at his waist emphasize his martial identity. The exaggerated weapon silhouettes in the background amplify his imposing presence, suggesting both his legendary prowess and the famous tale of him collecting a thousand swords from defeated opponents.

The fourth-generation head, Takahashi Matsuyama IV (real name Takahashi Bunpei), born in 1932 (Showa 7), succeeded to the name in 1962. Recognized by Shiga Prefecture as a holder of designated traditional craft techniques, he devoted himself to maintaining the classical themes and painting methods of Ōtsu-e, reinforcing its cultural and historical value.

The bold outlines, flat color planes, and dynamic yet slightly stylized rendering of the warrior monk Benkei strongly reflect the Ōtsu-e aesthetic. In this context, the work is not merely a depiction of a legendary figure, but part of a living folk tradition that has been carefully handed down through generations of the Takahashi family in Ōtsu.
