SHP251 - Shikishi Card of Zen phrase by Shisui

This shikishi calligraphy presents the Zen phrase 春來草自生, written in bold, grounded brushwork by 紫水 (Shisui). The four large characters dominate the surface with calm authority, each stroke confident yet unforced, revealing the artist’s control of ink, pressure, and rhythm.

The phrase translates literally as “When spring comes, the grass grows by itself.” In Zen thought, it conveys a profound truth: when conditions are right, things unfold naturally without forcing or interference. It is a teaching about trust—in time, in nature, and in the inherent order of the world. Rather than striving anxiously, one allows growth to arise of its own accord.

Shisui’s calligraphy embodies this message visually. The characters are full-bodied and steady, with slight variations in ink density that suggest breath and movement. The balance between strength and openness mirrors the meaning of the phrase itself—firm presence paired with natural flow. The empty space around the characters is as important as the inked strokes, reinforcing the Zen idea that what is left unsaid or unforced carries its own power.
