SHP234 - Shikishi Card by Mushanokoji Saneatsu 武者小路実篤
This shikishi features the single, powerful character 和 (wa), meaning harmony, rendered in bold, unrestrained brushwork by 武者小路実篤 (Mushanokōji Saneatsu). The composition is intentionally spare: the large central character dominates the warm, tea-toned paper, allowing the energy of the ink and the movement of the brush to speak directly to the viewer.
The calligraphy reflects Mushanokōji’s distinctive aesthetic—direct, humanistic, and sincere. The strokes are thick and uneven, emphasizing vitality over refinement, a hallmark of his belief that art should express the heart rather than technical perfection. The softly aged ground of the shikishi adds warmth and depth, reinforcing the sense of calm and acceptance embodied in the word wa.
Mushanokoji Saneatsu (1885–1976) was a renowned Japanese novelist, playwright, philosopher, and painter. A founding member of the Shirakaba (White Birch) literary group, he helped usher in a wave of humanistic and idealistic thinking in early 20th-century Japan — a distinct contrast to the naturalism dominating the era. His literary work often emphasized themes of kindness, individual dignity, and ideal societies.
In his later years, Mushanokoji turned to painting as a spiritual and creative pursuit, frequently depicting fruits, flowers, and calligraphy with messages of peace and goodwill. He remained artistically active until his passing and is remembered as a vital figure in both modern Japanese literature and art.
