SHP203 - Shikishi Print by Yoshikawa Masahiko 吉川正彦
A shikishi PRINT by Yoshikawa Masahiko (吉川正彦), the artist appears to be a regional Japanese Nihonga-style artist active mainly in the late Shōwa period (1970s–1990s). The shikishi print depicts a scene of mice gathered around a rounded pumpkin, rendered in gentle washes of soft grey and muted green, a mouse approaches a bean pod. The simplicity of the brushstrokes and the airy white background give the composition a quiet, almost poetic feeling.
On the reverse of the shikishi is a printed explanation about the significance of the Rat in the zodiac. It explains that in the traditional twelve-year cycle, the Rat (子) was chosen from ancient Chinese lore because the character “子” could easily be learned by the populace and carried symbolic meaning. People born in the Year of the Rat, the note says, are believed to possess strong independence, abundant vitality, and the destiny to prosper, often thriving in environments that encourage effort and innovation. The message concludes with a blessing for the artwork to bring good fortune and an auspicious year, connecting it to the theme of 開運 (good luck and renewal).
The composition emphasizes harmony, modesty, and quiet joy. An animal long regarded as a symbol of fertility, resourcefulness, and auspicious beginnings. Together they create a scene that feels both peaceful and full of gentle good fortune.
