SHP165 - Vintage Shikishi Crab and Moon
This shikishi (色紙) features a small crab scuttles across the sandy shore, rendered in soft, fluid brushstrokes of gray, blue, and muted orange. Behind it, a rocky islet and a hint of foliage evoke the quiet seaside atmosphere, where land and water meet under the gentle light of the moon. The brushwork is minimal yet expressive, allowing space and suggestion to create a tranquil sense of depth, a hallmark of traditional nihonga and sumi-e aesthetics.
The calligraphy above the crab is a haiku related to the crab beneath the moon. The verse and the image together evoke a fleeting, almost meditative moment, the moonlit tide, the foam of the waves, and the quiet movement of the crab. It’s a reflection on impermanence and harmony in nature, where even the smallest creature becomes part of the larger rhythm of the world.
A red seal (hanko) and the artist’s signature grace the lower left corner, completing this elegant expression of Japanese poetic and visual sensibility, where nature, transience, and calm coexist beautifully.
