This vintage shikishi print by Mushanokōji Saneatsu (武者小路実篤, 1885–1976) combines poetry, calligraphy, and painting, reflecting his philosophy of life, beauty, and love.
Inscription: この世は美と愛の無盡の宝庫也 "This world is an inexhaustible treasure house of beauty and love."
The artwork features a cosmos flower in bloom, in delicate pink hues with a yellow center, flanked by two buds, symbolizing growth, vitality, and renewal. The brushstrokes are simple yet full of life, embodying the charm of Japanese bokuseki traditions.
Mushanokoji’s unique seal is featured boldly in red ink on the front, with an additional original stamp on the back, authenticating the work as part of his later artistic period.
Mushanokoji Saneatsu (1885–1976) was a renowned Japanese novelist, playwright, philosopher, and painter. A founding member of the Shirakaba (White Birch) literary group, he helped usher in a wave of humanistic and idealistic thinking in early 20th-century Japan — a distinct contrast to the naturalism dominating the era. His literary work often emphasized themes of kindness, individual dignity, and ideal societies.
In his later years, Mushanokoji turned to painting as a spiritual and creative pursuit, frequently depicting fruits, flowers, and calligraphy with messages of peace and goodwill. He remained artistically active until his passing and is remembered as a vital figure in both modern Japanese literature and art.
