Vintage chigiri-e artwork card. Chigiri-e (ちぎり絵) is a traditional Japanese art form that involves creating images by tearing and layering pieces of hand-dyed washi paper (Japanese paper). The name comes from the word “chigiru” (ちぎる), meaning “to tear,” and “e” (絵), meaning “picture.” The artwork depicts a traditional Japanese representation of Hina Ningyo (雛人形), or Hina dolls, which are commonly associated with Hinamatsuri (the Doll Festival or Girls’ Day) in Japan. The two figures shown are likely the Emperor (Odairi-sama) and Empress (Ohime-sama), the central pair in a typical Hina doll set. These figures are dressed in traditional Heian-period court attire and symbolize a royal wedding. They are often displayed on the top tier of a Hina doll platform during the festival, celebrated on March 3rd. Size: 24x27cm #SHP15 #ShikishiKYO
