A vintage Japanese zen brush art. It features the powerful single character 忍, meaning endurance, perseverance, or patience in Japanese. Boldly rendered in dynamic brushstrokes of rich black sumi ink, the character fills the space with strength and intention.

The kanji 忍 is composed of two parts: 刃 (ha / jin) – meaning “blade” or “sword” 心 (kokoro) – meaning “heart” or “mind” Together, these components form a powerful image: “A blade over the heart” — symbolizing the act of suppressing one’s emotions, desires, or impulses in order to endure hardship.

The composition balances stillness and motion, weight and flow, capturing the essence of忍 — a core virtue in Japanese and Zen philosophy. The act of enduring with dignity, of maintaining inner strength through hardship, is embodied in the character’s sweeping form. Signed and sealed by the artist, this piece reflects the spontaneous, spiritual nature of shodō (書道), or Japanese calligraphy, not just writing, but a meditative practice where the brush captures the state of the artist’s mind.

Size: 24 x 27cm
