SHP141 - Vintage Original Shikishi artwork card

A captivating vintage Japanese shikishi (色紙) artwork by the artist Seika (精華) portrays a costumed monkey in a richly detailed and symbolic scene, blending elements of folklore, ritual, and charm.

The monkey is shown walking upright, dressed in a vivid blue happi coat adorned with a striking white phoenix-like motif. Perched on its head is a ceremonial hat featuring a bold red sun emblem and black stripes, referencing traditional attire used in Shinto rituals or festival performances (matsuri).

In its hand, the monkey carries a gohei (御幣) a sacred wand with white paper streamers, commonly used in Shinto purification ceremonies. The inclusion of this item highlights the spiritual tone of the piece and suggests the monkey is enacting a ritualistic role, possibly as a symbolic messenger or divine intermediary. To the left, a delicate bonsai-like pine tree adds a grounding natural element and further emphasizes the festive, auspicious atmosphere.

Monkeys have long been revered in Japanese folklore as clever, protective, and sometimes mischievous figures. They also serve as messengers of the gods, especially in shrines dedicated to Hie or Sannō deities. Size: 24 x 27cm
