K10019 - Pair of Vintage Japanese Kappa Kokeshi
One set of Japanese wooden Kappa kokeshi dolls with bodies shaped like Japanese sake bottles (tokkuri). This type of Kokeshi dolls were sold as souvenirs in a local gift shop, Kappa Kokeshi usually come from hot springs or the three famous Kappa regions: Tono, Chiba and Kyushu. In Japanese folklore, Kappa are usually depicted as green human-like beings with webbed hands and feet and a turtle-like shell on their back. A depression on their head, called their "dish", holds water, and if this is damaged or its liquid is lost (either by spillage or drying out), the kappa is severely weakened. Kappa are known to favor cucumbers and love to engage in sumo wrestling.
