K18053 - Omiyage Onsen souvenir kokeshi doll

K18053 - Omiyage Onsen souvenir kokeshi doll

This is a vintage omiyage kokeshi doll, a traditional Japanese wooden souvenir doll often sold in tourist areas.

The body is elegantly tapered and hand-painted with a serene landscape scene, depicting misty mountains and trees in a traditional Japanese sumi-e (ink wash) style. In Shintoism, mountains are believed to be the dwelling places of gods (kami). Many shrines are built on or near mountains, it is a common symbol representing strength, stability, and nature’s power.

The contrast between the natural wood grain and the dark, painted elements adds to its vintage charm. The top section of the body is dark-stained, creating a visually appealing division between the head and the main design.

Omiyage kokeshi like this one were typically sold as souvenirs in hot spring (onsen) towns or other travel destinations in Japan.
