FT99 - Omiyage kokeshi from Izu Oshima

A vintage souvenir kokeshi doll from Izu Ōshima (伊豆大島), the largest of the Izu Islands, located south of Tokyo in the Pacific Ocean. Known for its volcanic landscapes, lush forests, and rich folklore, Izu Ōshima is home to the active Mount Mihara (三原山).

The kokeshi’s body is creatively shaped like a flowing wave or a stylized character “C,” possibly symbolizing the movement of the ocean waves surrounding Izu Ōshima. A hand-painted nighttime landscape features pine trees, mountains, and red flowers, evoking the island’s natural beauty. The larger kokeshi at the top has a rounded head and wears a traditional wooden bucket on top, inscribed with 伊豆大島 (Izu Ōshima).

Izu Ōshima is famous for its volcanic activity, including the legendary Mount Mihara, which has shaped the island’s culture and landscape. The bucket on the larger kokeshi’s head could symbolize the island’s abundant hot springs (onsen) or the local fishing industry, both integral to Izu Ōshima’s history.
