SK010 - Yajiro by Koichi Sato 佐藤幸一
This Yajiro kokeshi by 佐藤幸一 Koichi Sato (born 1936) is a fine example of the balanced simplicity and rhythmic decoration characteristic of the Yajiro tradition.
The doll features a broad, rounded head with a calm and friendly expression. The gently arched eyebrows and half-closed eyes create a peaceful, smiling face, while the small red mouth adds a touch of warmth. The glossy black hair cap frames the face and is accented with subtle red leaf-like motifs along the sides, a decorative detail often seen in Yajiro-style kokeshi.
The body is slightly wider and more cylindrical than many other regional styles, emphasizing the bold horizontal stripe patterns that define Yajiro design. Bands of red, black, and natural wood tones encircle the upper body, creating a striking visual rhythm that highlights the smooth turning of the wood. The lower body is left largely natural, allowing the grain and warm tone of the wood to remain visible beneath the lacquered finish.
Koichi Sato was born on February 22, 1936, in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, the third son of confectioner Sato Yotaro. In 1957 he began studying woodworking under Hamazu Heizaburo, a craftsman in the Yajiro tradition and a pupil of Sanai Niyama. Through this lineage, Koichi inherited techniques and stylistic elements connected to the classic Yajiro school. After many years working with his teacher, he became independent in Shiroishi in 1977 and began producing kokeshi under his own name.
