K30067 - Yajiro Kokeshi by Tatsuo Satō 佐藤辰雄
This elegant Yajirō Kokeshi was handcrafted by Tatsuo Satō (佐藤辰雄, 1928–2009), a respected artisan of the Yajirō tradition from Miyagi Prefecture. Born into a farming family in Yajirō, Tatsuo initially worked in charcoal production and agriculture before learning woodturning from his grandfather Imasaburō Satō. Around 1950, following the end of World War II, he began producing traditional kokeshi dolls and soon became one of the important craftsmen preserving the Yajirō style. He also passed his woodworking knowledge to his younger brothers, Yoshiaki and Yoshiharu Satō, as well as later mentoring Hideo Satō in 1981, helping ensure the continuation of the family's woodworking heritage.
The lower body is adorned with a beautifully painted chrysanthemum blossom (kiku) in brilliant shades of red, while the upper section features stylized leaf motifs that complement the floral composition. In Japanese culture, the chrysanthemum symbolizes longevity, elegance, and good fortune, making it one of the most enduring motifs in traditional folk art.
Tatsuo Satō's work reflects the honest craftsmanship of a maker deeply connected to his rural roots. His dolls combine careful woodturning with confident brushwork, preserving the warmth and vitality of Yajirō kokeshi while expressing his own understated artistic character. Though known among friends for his love of sake, he was equally respected for his dedication to teaching the next generation of craftsmen and maintaining the traditions of his hometown.
