This Shingata Daruma Kokeshi by Misui (美水) is a remarkable example of postwar Japanese creative folk art, blending the elegant simplicity of Shingata (“new-style”) kokeshi with the bold symbolic presence of the Daruma figure. Crafted during the height of Japan’s creative kokeshi movement in the 1960s–1970s, the piece reflects the era’s growing fascination with modern design while remaining deeply rooted in traditional folk aesthetics.

Misui was known for moving beyond the rigid conventions of regional kokeshi traditions, creating works distinguished by their abstract sensibility, strong graphic composition, and refined minimalism. During the flourishing postwar Sōsaku Kokeshi movement, his works gained widespread recognition, including reports of receiving the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award (Naikaku Sōri Daijin Shō) — one of the highest honors awarded to kokeshi artists in Japan.

The Daruma, inspired by Bodhidharma — the founder of Zen Buddhism — symbolizes perseverance, determination, resilience, and the fulfillment of wishes in Japanese culture. The juxtaposition of the peaceful feminine expression above and the fierce Daruma visage below creates a fascinating balance between calmness and inner strength.

The doll’s warm natural wood grain remains highly visible beneath the translucent lacquer and hand-painted motifs, giving the piece exceptional depth and organic beauty. Crimson floral patterns and bold black bands wrap around the body in rhythmic harmony, while the oversized rounded head and elongated cylindrical form embody the modern sculptural freedom characteristic of creative kokeshi from this period.
