This Naruko-style kokeshi by Takahashi Teruyuki 高橋輝行 (1940–2026) is a beautifully balanced example of the tradition, combining refined turning with bold, expressive floral decoration.
The doll features a classic Naruko form, with a slightly flared body and a well-defined neck marked by multiple fine concentric rings—an iconic element of Naruko craftsmanship. The head is smoothly rounded and proportionate, resting elegantly atop the neck. The face is rendered with gentle precision: softly arched brows, relaxed, smiling eyes, and a small red mouth that conveys warmth and quiet contentment. The hair is painted in a deep black with a central fringe, accented on both sides by red chrysanthemum-like ornaments that add a lively decorative touch.
The body is richly adorned with large, vividly painted red chrysanthemum (kiku) motifs, a hallmark of Naruko kokeshi. The blossoms are boldly arranged, with layered petals and contrasting dark leaves that create a strong visual rhythm. The intensity of the red pigment stands out beautifully against the pale wood ground, while the turning lines at the neck and base provide a sense of structure and harmony. The back remains mostly unadorned, allowing the natural grain of the wood to breathe and balance the composition.
Takahashi Teruyuki was born in Naruko and trained under Takahashi Morio at the renowned Takakan workshop, where he developed his skills in both woodturning and traditional design. Recognized early as a promising craftsman, he later established his own studio, Kokeshi no Takateru, and continued producing works that honor Naruko traditions while maintaining a clean, confident style. His family also contributed to the craft, with his wife Masako participating in painting from the late 1970s.
