K30036 - Hijiori kokeshi by Ushizō Sato 佐藤丑蔵
This Hijiori-style kokeshi by Ushizō Sato 佐藤丑蔵 (1889–1986) is a rare and historically significant example of early traditional craftsmanship, embodying the quiet strength and rustic character of the Hijiori lineage.
The doll features a large, rounded head set on a slender, elongated body, creating a distinctive and slightly top-heavy silhouette typical of older Hijiori forms. The face is rendered with remarkable restraint: gently arched brows, narrow eyes with a calm, introspective gaze, and a small, understated mouth. The expression feels contemplative and dignified, reflecting the aesthetic simplicity of early kokeshi. The hair is painted in a deep, solid black cap with minimal ornamentation, emphasizing the natural wood grain of the face.
The body is elegantly plain, allowing the material itself to take prominence. A softly brushed red motif—likely a stylized floral or vegetal design—appears faintly along the front, accompanied by subtle red banding near the base. The restrained decoration, combined with the warm patina of aged wood, gives the piece a quiet, timeworn beauty and a strong sense of authenticity.
Ushizō Sato was a pivotal figure in the development of Hijiori kokeshi. Born in 1889 in Togatta, he trained under family members before moving to Hijiori, where he became deeply involved in woodworking production and later served as a leading craftsman and instructor. He played an important role in the establishment of regional woodworking workshops and contributed to the spread and recognition of kokeshi through early publications in the 1930s. His works are valued for their archaic simplicity, strong form, and historical importance.
