This is a striking Kijiyama kokeshi by Onodera Koraku (小野寺幸楽, 1927–), a respected craftsman from Akita Prefecture and winner of the 1977 Shiraishi Kokeshi Competition. Carved from richly grained wood, this doll features a tall, rounded form with a serene expression and softly painted features that reflect Koraku’s refined, understated aesthetic.

The doll features a tall, smooth body and a contemplative expression, with finely painted eyes and lips that convey quiet elegance. The standout feature is the beautifully hand-painted red plum blossom motif, with bold blossoms blooming on black branches that wrap gracefully around the figure. Plum blossoms, a traditional symbol of perseverance and renewal in Japan, add depth and seasonal charm to the piece.

The natural patterns of the material enhance the design’s warmth and artistry. This kokeshi reflects the unique sensibility of the Kijiyama tradition, while also showcasing Koraku’s refined and personal touch. As the artist is now in his 90s, his works have become increasingly treasured among collectors.
