K30021 - Omiyage Brush Kokeshi from Dazaifu 太宰府

This is a distinctive omiyage (souvenir) brush-style kokeshi from Dazaifu (太宰府), a city in Fukuoka Prefecture renowned for its deep cultural roots and as the home of Dazaifu Tenmangū Shrine, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deified patron of learning and literature.

The kokeshi features an elongated, tapered head that resembles a traditional calligraphy brush, a subtle and elegant nod to Dazaifu’s connection with scholarship and poetry. Her face is delicately hand-painted with calm, meditative features, evoking a gentle and refined spirit.

The cylindrical body is beautifully hand-painted with white plum blossoms (梅, ume)—a symbolic flower of Dazaifu and a cherished motif at Tenmangū shrines. The plum blossom represents perseverance, purity, and the arrival of spring, as it is one of the first flowers to bloom even in the cold. In the context of Dazaifu, the plum blossom is especially significant, as legend tells of the "flying plum tree" (tobi-ume) that followed Michizane into exile, blooming at his side.

The poetic verse enhances the kokeshi’s connection to the themes of renewal, hope, and beauty, embodying the spirit of early spring in Japan.
