K30016 - Sosaku kokeshi by Sato Suigai 佐藤翠涯

A vintage sōsaku kokeshi set, titled "Mother & Child", was created by the renowned artist Sato Suigai (佐藤翠涯) a master wood artisan whose creative spirit bridges fine art, craftsmanship, and maternal tenderness.

Standing at 29cm tall, the main figure represents a mother, her form gracefully elongated and gently curved. Her serene, hand-painted expression and tilted head evoke a quiet, affectionate moment. The sweeping brushstrokes of her kimono, adorned with a delicate pine motif, emphasize simplicity and warmth, hallmarks of Suigai’s signature minimalist style. Nestled beside her is a smaller child figure, equally gentle in expression, with a playful red ribbon painted across the front of its body.

Together, the figures embody the deep bond between parent and child, making this piece not only a masterclass in modern kokeshi design but also a poetic tribute to familial love.

Sato Suigai (佐藤翠涯) born in Okubo, Yoshioka Village in Gunma Prefecture, Sato Suigai began his creative journey as a painter under the influential Japanese artist Komuro Suiun. After World War II, he transitioned into kokeshi-making in 1946, bringing with him a diverse background in fashion design, mechanics, and engineering.
