K30008 - Tsuchiyu by Masanaga Umezu 梅津正永
Tsuchiyu Kokeshi by Masanaga Umezu (梅津正永) is a stunning example of the traditional Tsuchiyu style, originating from Fukushima Prefecture. This kokeshi doll is characterized by its slender body, rounded head, and elegant hand-painted designs. Masanaga Umezu was born on September 9, 1923, in Sakuramoto, Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. His family business was in rice milling, but in his middle years, he decided to pursue kokeshi-making. He trained under Kenichi Nishiyama (西山憲一), a renowned Tsuchiyu-style kokeshi artisan, and began creating kokeshi dolls around 1970. Umezu's works were influenced by Nishiyama but had a distinct style, characterized by gentle facial expressions and delicate lathe-turned lines. He passed away on November 25, 2009, at the age of 87. Masanaga Umezu’s work often features delicate brushwork with geometric patterns, or flowing lines, bringing a sense of movement and grace to the piece. The face is typically painted with a gentle expression, marked by thin, arching eyebrows and soft red lips, conveying a sense of warmth and charm. Made from high-quality mizuki (dogwood) this kokeshi has a smooth, polished surface that highlights the natural grain of the wood. This Umezu’s dolls feature a slightly tapered body and a subtle color gradient, adding depth to the overall design. When gently turned, the head may produce a soft creaking sound, adding a unique interactive element to the doll. Size: 30 cm tall
