A vintage Togatta-style kokeshi showcases the distinct characteristics of the Miyagi Prefecture's traditional craftsmanship. The face is delicately painted with expressive, slightly slanted eyes, fine black eyebrows, and a gentle smile, exuding a refined yet playful charm. Isamu Agatsuma (我妻勇), born in 1934, is a distinguished Japanese artisan renowned for his mastery in crafting traditional Togatta-style kokeshi dolls. He apprenticed under Sato Ushizo, a respected kokeshi craftsman, which profoundly influenced his development in this traditional art form. The doll’s head is adorned with bold red and black motifs, including a signature "ribbon-like" headdress pattern, a common design in Togatta kokeshi. The body is beautifully decorated with striking red chrysanthemum (kiku) floral patterns, accentuated by black brushwork that enhances the contrast and elegance of the design. The upper portion features dynamic V-shaped brushstrokes, representing stylized leaves or floral accents, adding to the doll's lively aesthetic. Agatsuma's creations are celebrated for their elegant and minimalist designs, skillfully highlighting the natural beauty of the wood grain through understated painting techniques. His work exemplifies the cultural heritage of the Tohoku region, where the Togatta style originated. Size: 30cm tall
