This kokeshi doll is from 1960s.
Tatsuo Hasegawa born on January 14, 1905, as the third son of woodcarver Sasaki Kinsuke of Miyashita, Itadome, Yamagata Village, Minamitsugaru County, Aomori Prefecture. Around 1921, he briefly learned woodcarving from his brother Sasaki Kinjiro, but it was not until 1924 that he began to train in woodcarving under Shimazu Hikosaku, the president of Owani Woodworking Co., Ltd. He first painted kokeshi in 1926, and everyone praised him for his skill in painting and coloring, and he subsequently took on the painting techniques of most of the other Owani craftsmen.
In 1934, Tatsuo opened his own shop in Yunokawara, Owani-cho, using a foot-operated potter's wheel, and in 1937 he was listed as "Kuradate Hasegawa Jinsuke" in the Tokyo Kokeshi Association's Kokeshi Makers Ranking.
